"Fashion Cares for Haiti: The Relief Benefit Fashion Show"

11/14/2010 3:00:00 AM

Nassau, Bahamas: It’s the finale of “Islands of The World Fashion Week 2010” and producers Mode Îles Ltd, planned a special evening for all persons in attendance; “Fashion Cares for Haiti: The Relief Benefit Fashion Show. Runway 3 showcased collections from 7 talented and diverse Haitian designers; Phelicia Dell (Veve Collection), David Andre, Giovanna Menard (Artisans du Soleiel), Michel Chataigne, Maguy Durce, Maelle David (Maelle Creations) and Savannah Savary. The intent of the evening was to display the fashion talents from the people of Haiti and amplify the possibility of the fashion and design industry as a “plus” to the Haitian economy. Ranging from cultural wear, jewelry, plus sizes, accessories and prêt-à-porter, these designers hit the runway with the intent of changing the perception of fashion from their native land.

One of the highlights of the evening was from designer Maelle David (Maelle Creations), whose “full-figured” line, worn by Bahamian beauty queens; Ms. Full-Figured Bahamas, Ms. Teen Plus Bahamas and two previous contestants, were runway favorites! Uncommon to the runway, the designs were flattering and indicative of the size of many Caribbean women. The show continued with exquisite jewelry and accessory designers; Giovanna Menard and Savannah Savary, whose intricate pieces were reflective of jewels of African kings and queens. IWFW veteran, Andre David returned to the runway with his “cool” and “bohemian-chic” collection for spring 2011.

Proudly looking on for the evening were specially invited guest; The Haitian Ambassador to the United Nations; H.E. Leo & Madame Merores, Haitian Ambassador to the Bahamas; Mr. Antonio Rodrigue and a group of enthused Haitian diplomats, who came to support the initiative by Mode Îles Ltd. The large Haitian contingent intently applauded and chaired on each designer, paying respect to their design works and accomplishments.

The evening ended with awards being presented for the special design categories and competitions over the 3 day week. Noted judges of the competitions included celebrity fashion designer; Jay McCarroll, Dean of Parsons The New School of Design; Simon Collins and Senior Director of IMG Fashion; Louis Sarmeinto. And the winners are…

·         “In Search of the Next Oscar”- Georgina Estherr (Dominican Republic)

·         “NextGen”- David Rolle (Bahamas)

·         Eco-Fashion Award- Oliver Tolentino (Philippines)

·         Cultural-Fashion Award- Phelicia Dell (Haiti)

·         “Runway to Fashion Week”- Theodore Elyett (Bahamas)

The rhythmic sounds of drumb beats and the pulsating stomps of dance group “Silk & Steel” brought the three nights of “island spectacular” to an end and ushered guest out to a beach-front after-party. The evening filled with Haitian inspired performances by the Bahamas National Youth Choir and Haiti band "Lakol", culminated IWFW 2010 and left guest in great anticipation of Islands of the World Fashion Week 2011!

Mr. Owen Bethel, President of Mode Iles and “Islands of the World Fashion Week” producer, thanks designers for participating, the international and local guests for attending and for the partners who made it all happen; King’s Realty, American Airlines, Ministry of Tourism, British Colonial Hilton, CDM Beauty Division, Red Bull, Fiji Water, Bambu Lounge, Mario's and much more, “see you at Islands of the World Fashion Week 2011”!
